Is it suppose 2 hurt when you change your tongue ring?

Everytime i change my tongue ring, it hurts. Its not infected. Ive had my tongue ring for about 3 months. And if i put another one in besides the original one, after i change it back, it hurts. Is that normal? When can i change my tongue ring with out it hurting?

huh… interesting. now a lot of dentists wil give you a hard time “oral piercings are evil blah blah”…i’m concerned about patients irritating their gums or chipping teeth, but if you’re CAREFUL you CAN be ok w/ them, so i’ll go on…you DO want to have dental visits at least once a year to make sure you’re not doing any damage, tho..
ok, so when you change the ring out, are you goign from a larger gauge to smaller? as you know, the hole (like ears) will stay as large as you let it; if you leave the ring/shaft out, it’ll close up on its own. so if you put a smaller one in, the tongue shrinks up; then you go back and it’s sore.

there’s also some relation between oral soft tissues and hormone fluctuations. You may notice this could be related around your period, but You’ll have to be the judge of that. (this is assuming you’re female; but even male have monthly hormone changes…)

this is about the only thing you’ve given to go on… in the meantime, if it’s sore take 1-2 ibuprofen (motrin/advil) every 4 hours for a day or so and rinse w/ some warm salt water if it’s sore.

    good luck!

It’s because your toungue is healing quick so the hole is getting smaller. Oral wounds heal faster in general.

You are suppose to leave the tongue ring in for 4 months and then you change it.

When you first get your tongue barbell, you shouldn’t take it out at all for at least one month.

I’ve had mine for years and occasionally it will hurt if I leave it out for a day and put another one in or if I change gauges. Also, I’ve noticed that titanium bars tend to stretch out the tongue more (using a titanium bar can also help expand your piercing for a thicker gauge) and if you switch to titanium, it may also hurt/swell a little.

Mine hurts too everytime I change it. On the underside when the threaded part passes in or out, it hurts like hell. Also I get slight swelling and sensitive tastebuds quite often. I know its not infected. I guess Im just very sensitive. A small price to pay to keep my piercing. I wouldn’t consider losing it. Today I’ve put an acryllic bar in to see if it makes any difference.
