How long can you keep a tongue ring?

I got my tongue pierced earlier last year, but I took it out shortly after. I kept the ring (straight barbell) because I plan on getting my tongue pierced again soon. How long are you supposed to keep or how long can you keep one?

I know some people who keep theirs soaking in mouthwash. Is that the right thing to do?

You can keep your tongue jewelry however long you want to.
I have had some of my jewelry for 4-5 years or so. What I do is either wash it with soap and water or put it in peroxide for 5-10 minutes, and then place it in my jewelry box with the rest of my jewelry.

The jewelry itself as long as it is a quality stainless steel ( 316lvm f-138) or implant grade titanium will last forever.

To “store” it between uses, soak it in alcohol for a couple of hours, wipe it down well with a clean cotton ball and place it in a small ziploc baggy (like the little ones that us piercers put jewelry in that you buy out of the display case). This way they are kept clean and the small balls are guaranteed to not get lost.

Before you use it again, just wipe it down with alcohol.
